Hi Paul,
Great news, unfortunately I'm experiencing the 'logging in forever' issue on my comp (OSX 10.6.3, LR3B2). Have tried various tricks but didn't manage to log in correctly and initiate an export.
Let me know if you need some more info to tackle this issue.
Best,
Fred

Hi Fred,

Sorry to hear you experience the log-in problem. Here is what you can do to help.

Goto to the plugin manager in lightroom. When you view the Photoshelter Archive plugin, there is a checkbox to enable logging. Enable it and "Reload Plug-in".
This will create a log file pactphotoshelte r.txt in your home folder.
Try to login, and send me the log file.

thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul,
I just downloaded your plug-in for the first time and it looks great... the only problem is I cant seem to log in... when I go to the export dialog and enter my photoshelter's user info under the "email" and password fields, i get a message that says "login attempt failed, no user or password provided".
I tried what you suggested in this thread a few times but it did not work. What can I do?
Many thanks!

Hi Cecile,

Sorry to hear you experience problems with the plugin.
If you activate the logging option for the plugin in the lightroom plugin manager, the plugin will create a log file. It is called pactphotoshelte r.log and is in your home folder or "My Documents" if you are on windows. Send it to me and I will investigate the issue.

Many thanks, Paul. I was investigating how to send you the file when I stumbled upon another post (Jim Templeton-Cross 2010-06-16 15:06) with the same problem I had. I did what you recommended there and it worked! Thanks so much again. Keep up the good work! (I'll help out a bit by donating!).

Sorry to say but the plug-in I was so satisfied with isn't working for me anymore!! hope someone can shed some light on this.. I've done 2 things that could have caused the plug-in from working correctly.

1) I've updated to Lightroom 2.7
2) I created an user preset export to save raw files to my image archive back-up system.

Done everything to fix it reinstall plug-in, deleted every other plug-in, cleaned registry, rebooted system but still not working hope someone has an answer since I was so happy with this plug-in thanks in advance! Erwin

 Ah stupid me overlooked the option above to choose for the plug-in and then make your own preset. I thought by enabling the plug-in it would pop-up on the left.. My fault not installing plug-ins or making presets on a daily base. thanks for the great plug-in! keep up the good work!!!

Glad to hear you got it working Erwin.

I skipped the predefined upload presets in this version of the plugin. The presets make more sense if you create your own. But in this case it could have let to confusion.

Hi Paul and thanks for your work and the new verion.

I downloaded it today (5/7/2010), put it in my plugin folder, launched LR 2.6, opened Plugin Manager, checked the login box and reloaded the plugin as indicated above. The problem is when I go to the Export panel, I do not even see the plugin. When removing the latest version of the plugin and replacing it by the old one (v1.4), then it works and I see the plugin in the Export panel and can log into my PhotoShelter account.

Could this be due to the latest update you mention in your post of 2010-05-05 7:02?

Thanks a lot Paul, it worked, I was confused because the previous version was automatically showing up.

And the latest version allowed a login into the account, although I had to try several times until it was accepted.

Hi Paul. I'm on a mac, OS 10.5.8, and new to your plug-in. I just tried to install the 2.2 version for lightroom to photoshop. I went to plug-in manager and enabled the plug-in. It says it's up and running, but I can't find where to access it. It's not showing up under export presets. I have disabled and redone this a number of times. What am I doing wrong? I am stumped as to where am I supposed to enter the photoshop lightroom login details.

Hi Rikki,

Sorry for the confusion. I skipped the preset in this version of the plugin. If you open the export dialog, there is an image at the top. Mostly likely it is the default "export to file". If you click this image, a menu will show allow you to select other export plugins, including the photoshelter export plugin.

let me know if this works for you.

Hi Paul

Having been a happy user of your plug-in I uploaded the latest version and made a donation. I used it first with Lightroom 3beta, without problem. Now however I am going back to my main catalogue and it asks to update my catalog for plug-in and if I agree it never finishes. I just get the barber's pole with message 'Updating catalog for plug-in properties from "Photoshelter Archive"
This is upsetting as it has been great - but not now!
Help please!

Hi Marie-Louise,

edit: Marie-Louise confirmed that it indeed was a large catalogue. Updating a large catalogue takes a long time before it completes. (unfortunately all this without a progress indicator)

Sorry to hear about this. I assume your main catalogue is a large one?

The update process goes through the entire catalogue and checks if a photo is uploaded to photoshelter with version 1.4 of the plugin. This is to keep the information available.

Unfortunately I didn't have a large enough catalogue available to estimate the duration of this update.
How long have you kept it running?

In lightroom 3beta this update mechanism isn't available. So there is no problem there.

I'll contact you via email, to solve this issue.

I'm having the same issue as William. Same error message: "An internal error has occurred: .\PhotoshelterAP I.lua:81:attempt to index local 's'(a number value)

LR 3 Beta 2
LR 2.7 (it happens in both versions. 1.4 plugin works fine with 2.7, I retested after disabling the newer version)

Windows XP SP 3
For what it's worth: LR plugins in a subfolder of "Documents".

Looks like my original "reply" post was to the wrong thread! But Paul fixed the issue anyway, I'm not getting the error anymore.

In order to actually contribute to *this* thread: in LR 2.7 I updated my catalogue for the plugin, and it took a long enough time that I wasn't sure if the computer was frozen.

I left it running while I was out and about, and it *did* complete the task eventually. This was on a catalogue of over 135000 1D Mark II CR2 files.

I was able to load with plug in manager no problem, it shows up under export menu no problem. Just repeated attempts all get this error code. shut down and reloaded, no help, still doing same thing. thanks in advance for the help!!

Thanks for a great plugin. I will donate!

From your description of the latest version, I wasn't clear if this allows you to only update metadata on an image already uploaded to PS? This would be great -- I'm often late on uploading due to the time needed for keywording and captioning. So much faster in LR, but it still takes time...

Great Twitter icon :)

Hi Djuna,

Unfortunately it is not possible to update metadata after you uploaded it to photoshelter. so you have to do it in lightroom before uploading.
I have the same problem, :-) so many photos to keyword and caption. Often ending up uploading without keywords and captions. Not a good thing.

Glad you like the twitter icon. I was considering changing it to a standard button. I leave it on for now.

Is this a Plug-in or PhotoShelter limitation? You may know of Jime Keir's Alamy Picture Manager for Lightroom http://www.lightroom-plugins.com/AlamyIndex.php which does extract Alamy specific metadata and bring it into Lightroom. Captions, keywords etc can be further edited in Lightroom and changes exported directly to Alamy.

What's stopping us having this feature with PhotoShelter?

In my opinion it is a Photoshelter limitation. The available method (so called API) doesn't provide this functionality. You can query an image, but the information returned is very limited.

A work around would be to load the normal webpages and extract the keywords from there. I did consider this option. But structure of a website changes often and the amount of data to transfer is so large. (in comparison to the API calls)

I am currently creating a list of changes to the API to propose to Photoshelter.

  • detailed photo information (caption, keywords etc)
  • get photos in a archive folder
  • get photos in a gallery
  • option to add photos to a gallery
  • replace photos

I welcome any other suggestion.

Paul

Hi Paul.
I have version 1.4 of your plugin. I tried to upgrade to the latest version, but once I have installed the new plugin it won't accept my photoshelter login details. It keeps on saying "Login attempt failed. No username or password provided", even though I have entered them correctly. I have checked that login is enabled in the plug in manager and have tried reloading the plugin.

Are you entering the username and password in the export dialog? If you are on the Mac, make sure you use the tab key to exit the edit box before clicking the login button.

If you have enabled the logging in the plugin manager, you can also check the log file. It is in your home folder and is called pactphotoshelte r.log.

You can also email it to me, so I can review it.

Hi Ben,

I am sorry the start procedure is a little unclear. I really have to work on it.
If you open the export dialog in lightroom, you'll see in the top bar of the dialog a field where you can select the active export plugin. The default is the export to file from Lightroom. If you select the photoshelter plugin here, the dialog will change and field come available to enter your login details.

I will sent you a jpg later tonight to show it.

Hi H,

I am sure you are pretty savvy, the problem is the limited installation instructions I provided. Best way is to disable/uninstall the 1.4 version of the plugin in the plugin manager.

If you open the export dialog, probably the default export option (export to disc) will be selected again. If you click on the top image in the export dialog, you can select a different export option. Pick the Photoshelter export from this list.

Let me know if this works for you.

Currently it is not possible to mark previously uploaded photos. I am considering an option that allows synchronising photos uploaded with photos in lightroom. Note: synchronising metadata won't be possible until photoshelter makes some changes.

What is the benefit of this Metadata viewer preset editor?

It allows you to build your own 'view' (subset) of the metadata, so you can see only the fields you want to work on. It creates additional views to the ones available as standard in LR.

I want to be able to see when images are marked as uploaded by your uploader, and I want that line to be near the top of the metadata, so I don't have to scroll down to see it. Jeffrey's plugin would allow me to build a metadata view to achieve this, but he needs some info from you to include the PS uploader metadata.

I hadn't thought of that, though it's only recently that it has become a bit of an issue for me. But it would be helpful to have the immediate knowledge 'is this picture on the site?' when I am doing other stuff, without having to check if it's in a collection - having that one extra line in the metadata viewer would be useful.

Paul

Just ran across this plugin and thought I would give it a try. I have placed the folder in my plugin directory and it does appear in teh Lightroom Plugin Manager list but that is all. I cannot make is show up in my list of published Services and it does not show up on my plugin extras.

How are you supposed to use it?

In the plugin manager is does state is is enabled.

thanks

Layne

Hi Layne,

Thanks for trying the plugin.
The plugin is an export plugin for lightroom. So it won't show up in the publish services of lightroom 3.
If you chose file-export (CTRL+SHIFT+E)y ou will get the export dialog. At the top of the dialog is an "export to" drop down box. Select the "Export files to Photoshelter Personal Archive". The dialog should now have a section for entering your photoshelter account details.

Let me know it this helps you.

Thanks for the info but even though I can see the plug-in in the plug-in manager, it does not show up in the export to drop down as you indicate above.

Any other ideas?

thanks

Layne

Seems like a great plugin, but I'm having difficulties logging in. I've read possible solutions you had given others but still haven't located the problem. The error I get is: "Login attempt failed. Connecting to photoshelter failed."

Hi John,

It seems that a firewall or some windows security settings is preventing lightroom/plugin to connect to the photoshelter server.

Are you running any firewall software on your computer?

Thank you for the response Paul. I tried turning off the Firewall but I get the error code. I'll be upgrading to Lightroom 3 soon, I'm hoping that somehow resolves itself when I do.

Hi John,

If you consider upgrading to lightroom 3, you can use the following link
bit.ly/cn68qu
it would earn me a few dollars.

However I don't think it would solve the issue. Please contact me by email to see if we can figure out what causes the problem.

I had the problem logging in, too... the solution is to enter your login info and then either click out of that panel or tab off of it... when the cursor is in the password field (and that field 'has focus') it won't log in correctly. But getting the cursor out of that field solves the problem.

I'm having great success with the plug-in and it's made my life much easier. Great job, Paul!

Hi Nat,

Thank you for explaining the 'workaround' in your words. This is exactly what I tried to explain.

Good to hear the plugin makes your life easier.

I downloaded the plugin and choose LR3 as the location for it to download to. I went to the LR3 Plugin Manager and it was not there.
Did I download it incorrectly? How do I find the download so I can install it is LR3?
